8 More Teams ‘Stripped’ of Titles by FIFA After Man Utd, Liverpool & Man City Decision

Eight more teams have been stripped of a major FIFA title following Chelsea's Club World Cup victory. It was revealed that three Premier League teams - Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool - had lost their former world champion status as a result of the reformatting of the Club World Cup, which has meant that its former variation has now been demoted to 'intercontinental status'.

However, it is not just the English clubs that have suffered this fate either, as eight other clubs have found out they will also be stripped of their titles, including five European sides.

Eight More Teams Stripped of World Champion Status

Real Madrid and Barcelona were among those that lost their status

Among the big names who are now set to lose their World Championship titles are La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid, who lifted the Club World Cup five times under its old structure, will now need to reclaim that title under the tournament’s revamped format. For now, though, they remain the reigning holders of the Intercontinental Cup - a title that predates the current competition.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Real Madrid won the Club World Cup in its old format more than any other club.

The changes also impact other former champions, including Barcelona, who won it three times, as well as Bayern Munich and Corinthians, both two-time winners. Los Cules' last victory came in 2015 as the beat River Plate 3-0 in the final, while Bayern beat Mexican side Tigres UANL 1-0 in 2020. Corinthians came out on top against Chelsea in 2012 in one of the more shocking results.

In addition, Sao Paulo and Internacional, who were crowned champions in 2005 and 2006 respectively, AC Milan and arch-rivals Inter Milan are all stripped of their world champion status under the new criteria, marking a significant shift in how global club supremacy is officially recognised.
