The score was composed by Javier Navarette (of “Pan’s Labyrinth”) and was – as ever with Javier – like diving into a musical treasure chest.

Joe Dante directed one of my favorite childhood films – “Gremlins” so I was reasonably star-struck on meeting him (It’s “GREMLINS” c’mon!!!) and impressed by how much he really knows his music.

His former musical collaborator was the legendary Jerry Goldsmith – by whose passing we are left much the poorer – and artistically, it makes complete sense that he would choose to work with Javier Navarrete.

Congratulations on the win!

I absolultely loved working on this film with John Emerson Moore and TJ Martin. It turned out that John and I love the same bands and the guys really had a clear idea of the type of musical landscape they wanted for the film.

The cinematography is absolutely stunning and made my job so much easier as everything i needed was there on screen – the instrumental colors directly reflect the colors used in the cinematography.

Crispin Glover in The Donner Party

Crispin Glover is fantastic to watch and leads a very strong cast.

We recorded the score in Hollywood with some of my favorite string playing friends, lead by my dear friend Anna Kostyuchek.

The Vola da Gamba features heavily in the score and it is played to perfection by Denise Briese who also plays bass on the score.

The haunting bass flute solos are the work of the magnificent Robert Shulgold with scratchy Appalachian-style violin playing by James Sitterly (incidentally I made poor Sitterly play “out of tune” and de-tune the strings on his violin for “authenticity”… sorry Jim!).

The choir on the score is a chorus of young singers from Carlow, Ireland called ASPIRO and is under the expert direction of Mary Amond O’Brien.
The recording sessions in Ireland were produced by my dear friend Ollie Hennessy.

Recording this score was one of the most fun and rewarding musical experiences of my career!
Composer Russell Brower did an outrageous job with John Kurlander recording. I got to conduct this score at Skywalker Ranch with a hybrid orchestra from the San Francisco Symphony and Ballet orchestras (The “Skywalker Symphony)”. The musicianship was amazing and they were so good to us (but I was spoiled by great musicians in Ireland and LA already).

Thanks to concertmaster Roy Malan for such inspired leadership. I’m unabashedly proud of this! Thanks Russell.

On September 23rd I had the privilege of performing at the opening night of the LA Irish Film Festival.

I conducted some of my favorite string players in an electro-acoustic score I had been commissioned to write to 1920s silent Irish film “In Aimsir Phádraig” or “In the Days of St. Patrick”.

Thanks to Anna Kostyuchek, Kevan Torfeh, Dmitri Kourka, Shelly Ren and fantastic Denise Briese for working so hard and playing their hearts out!

We got a fantastic reception from the Irish community and thanks to those who flew in from Dublin for the festival.

The director of the festival Lisa Mclaughlin Strassman is a one-woman force to be reckoned with and has had another excellent year with an event she brought to life from the recesses of her ever creatively fertile imagination. Maith Thú a Lisa! (she kind of owns this town!).

Post performance at the opening of the LA Irish Film Festival 2009 at the Linwood Dunn Theatre Hollywood

So my friends, if you’ve ever practiced till your arms numbed, soldiered through an outdoor performance with freezing fingers and bad intonation, fluffed notes, played in a rest, found yourself a “billy-no-mates” at the end of a big firmata, been mocked at a masterclass (and as a result think participating in American Idol is for sissies), had your instrument stolen by those crafty instrument crooks that hide in the shadows at train stations, whacked your head off a music stand whilst picking up that elusive pencil you stole from your stand-mate at rehearsal… again,

spent all of your money on whiskey and gas…

…then you might find you own private fluffy-cushion-padded, mommy’s-milk-and-cookies comfort zone here with us at eimearworld – for those of you who are lactose and gluten intolerant see “vomitorium” below.

Why “eimearworld”?

Because we knew it was unlikely that Eimear would sue herself for using her own name.
