The Conducting Salon will be an on-going series of classes in conducting and will take place at the LAB school in Santa Monica on Sunday evenings.
The salon endeavors to give working musicians and students the opportunity to learn and practice conducting techniques in an on-going forum. We wil be working on the techniques needed for conducting both in the concert hall and studio environments, taking into account the techniques, ettiquette and practical concerns that come with each.
I have designed a system of participation keeping in mind the constantly alternating flux that is characteristic of the life of a musician in LA.
The participation options are as follows:
AUDITOR – observes the podium performances of participants throughout the course with the option to conduct a small ensemble at one of the later podium sessions.
Auditors will participate in all technique classes and are required to attend each weekly class.
PARTICIPANT – conducts from the set repertoire at each of the podium sessions* as well as taking part in every other aspect of the course.
Participants will have their work video-taped at these sessions for later analysis.
“Drop in” participants
This is a unique category I designed to make participation possible for those who would like to study conducting in a salon environment but can’t commit to a consistent week-by-week course structure. These participants may access the course schedule on-line and download the score materials in Pdf format in order to “drop in” and conduct a particular piece of repertoire at a given session. There will be two slots allotted for this type of participant at each live session, which will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
*sessions with reductions for piano(s) and soloists for concerto work
