January 2010... UCLA EXTENSION - "RECORD YOUR BIG CUE"

Record Your Big Cue!Music X 498.44.00 units

V5125OpenHollywood

This three-session workshop is for advanced film scoring students who are ready to record a cue with a 30-piece orchestra. The first meeting covers a discussion of the instrumentation of the ensemble; the best way to write for it; and how students should prep their scores, pre-records, and click tracks for the recording session. Participants can elect to compose a concert piece, cue their own video, or create a score to one of the instructor's pictures. Either way, they are responsible for making certain their Pro Tools sessions are prepared per the instructor's specifications. In the second meeting, scores and midi mock-ups of each composition are presented to the class--cues are reviewed, the orchestration is critiqued, and final suggestions for rewrites are given. In the last class, participants record their cues and have a total of 12-15 minutes with the ensemble. The orchestra is conducted by a professional conductor for expediency; however, students who wish to conduct their own pieces may do so within the required time limit. Prerequisite: X 483.1 Film Scoring I, X 483.3 Film Scoring II, and X 498 Film Scoring III or consent of the instructor. Enrollment limited; advance enrollment required.

NOV 30TH UCLA Extension conducting Class -

Our Musical Family

Last night we had an enlightening conducting session at the Shoenberg building on the UCLA campus.

I have the pleasure of teaching a very talented group of conducting students and we in turn have been spoiled by the work of the musicians who come and play for the class.

I've been thinking about this all day and kudos needs to be given here!:

Our string quartet last night consisted of the formidably talented Anna Kostyuchek, Amy Wickman, Marda Todd and Kevan Torfeh.

Although I've worked with these guys many times there's always that moment where I hear something and am reminded of how great these musicians really are and how privileged we are to work with them.

I actually wrote a short quartet piece for the class in order to illustrate some of the technical difficulties that had arisen over the past few weeks.

I was constantly concerned with what each student was getting from the piece technically but kept catching the quartet in musical dialogue with each other in ways I had and hadn't expected.

The musicianship and musicality was stunning.

We are so spoiled.

Not only are these guys part of our musical family but they have such an awesome respect for the music and young musicians on their way up.

There is a nurturing positivity, but more importatnly an unwavering faithfulness to the dots on the page and a true artistic humility that is uncommon.

Thanks Guys!

SKYWALKER RANCH - Blizzard Games' "Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty" recording on Direct TV:  Blink and you'll miss me! (Check out the vid. around 0:53). Two seconds of FAME!

The interview is given by Blizzard Games' Supreme Audio Commander, Russell Brower.

The score for the new game was written by Russell and fellow composers Neal Acree, Glen Stafford and Derek Duke.

I can't wait for it to come out - the guys wrote an excellent score:

I know - I WAS THERE!

Thanks to genius engineer and Abby Road alumnus John Kurlander for the cup o'tea in the middle of the session (we were both getting homesick) and a great big gloriously nerdy debate about orchestral seating (we had the second violins on conductor's right).

By the way:

The sound stage at Skywalker Ranch is in the middle of a vineyard!

It was very convenient to the bare-foot-grape-crushing ceremony we threw to the God Bacchus as thanks for a great session...

and every bottle of wine EVER.
